History

2003 - Our focus for the year was the opening of our new Salinas Unit - The Harden Youth Development Center. Our Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on September 29, 2003 and by the end of the year we had over 2,000 excited new members. This Club was definitely needed there! In October of this year, the decision was made to close the Carmel Valley Unit.
2002 – Our Ground Breaking Celebration for our new Salinas Unit was held on August 2, 2002. Directly following construction began on our new 42,000 square ft., state-of-the-art facility; The Harden Youth Development Center. Then, due to school district budget cuts, Juan Cabrillo Elementary School closed - causing our Outreach program to be incorporated into the Seaside Unit.
1999 – BGCMC's long-term strategic plan for growth implemented our official name change from Boys & Girls Clubs of the Monterey Peninsula to Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County. Our newest project was the preliminary stages of the new Salinas Unit, The Harden Youth Development Center, the product of two years of planning and collaboration of the Harden Foundation, local government, non-profit agencies and private business.
1998 – Opened a satellite Teen Club in Carmel Valley for members in grades 6 – 12.
1997 – Opened an after school outreach program in Seaside for predominantly non-English speaking students at Juan Cabrillo Elementary school.
1994 - The new facility begins operations.
1993 - Construction began on the Seaside Unit.
1992 – Ron Johnson was hired as the Program Director and Martin Barrett was hired as the new Executive Director.
1991 – Donna Ferraro was hired on as Resource Development Director.
1990 – A Capital Campaign Committee raised $2.1 million dollars to construct a 24,000 sq. ft. facility with a projected membership of 1500.
1988 - The Board of Directors decided to move forward with a Capital Campaign.
1987 - Mike Chapman and Herman Edwards established the Herm Edwards Charity Golf Classic with the support of the community.
1986 - The fiscal year operating budget was at an all-time high of $160,935, which included a United Way contribution of $55,313.
1985 - The Board voted to include girls in the membership and change the name to The Boys & Girls Club of the Monterey Peninsula.
1984 - A summer project was held which included young women
1979 - 1988 - A federal program, CETA, provided a secretary and three activity leaders. Membership grew to 400 male members. At the end of the CETA program the board made a decision to expand staffing, increasing the budget to $63,253 which included the United Way allocation of $36,653.
1976 - 1978 - On February 6, 1976 the new Boys Club was opened and Bernard Halprin was hired as the new Executive Director. By 1978 membership increased to 300 male members with a budget of $26K that included a $20K United Way allocation.
1973 - The purchase of the Church was complete. Volunteers worked weekends and grants were written to fund the project. Membership was up to 193 boys with a budget of $17K.
1972 - Edward Johnson was hired as first full-time Executive Director. Rapid growth of programs and members forced the Board to do a property search. The Church of Nazarene was found adjacent to Cutino Park in Seaside.

1971 - The Board moved the location to The City of Seaside’s youth center. The United Fund (now United Way) allocated us our first $5000.00.

1968 – Reverend, Al Benton of Seaside contacted Boys Club of America seeking information to start an official Boys Club The Boys Club of America incorporated The Boys Club of the Monterey Peninsula as an affiliate. The location was a home at 500 Hilby Street in Seaside and Roosevelt Williams was appointed as the first Executive Director.
1948 - Shortly after World War II, the club disbanded. The club was not re-established until November 1968.
1944 - Monterey Motorcycle Officer, George Dovolis and Police Chief, Fred Moore started the first uncharted Boys Club in The Molera Building. Unfortunately in 1948 it disbanded.
